Sportoletti’s Assisi Rosso DOC is a fine combination of 3 grape varieties. The vineyards lie at an altitude of 400 metres above sea level and were planted in 1999. Here too the climate is mild, with winter temperatures rarely dropping below 0 °C. Spring is usually warm with occasional rain, and summer is quite hot, allowing the grapes to ripen well.
The harvest starts in the first days of September with the Merlot. The Sangiovese and Cabernet Sauvignon follow afterwards. Immediately after harvesting, the grapes are taken to the cellar and kept for the first fermentation for 10 to 15 days at a controlled temperature in steel tanks. After this time the wine is aged further and, as a second stage, matures for a number of months in barrique before being bottled. After a final six months of ageing in the bottle, the Sportoletti Rosso is ready to be marketed.
This ruby-red wine with purple hues is very fresh, with notes of cherries, blackberries, spices and a hint of chocolate on the nose. Mild and with a good structure on the palate, with pleasant tannins at the finish.
