Description
Cantina Bettalunga Calamaio Grero Umbria IGT
Agricola Bettalunga, in the small place of Castello delle Forme, produces only organic wines. The red wine Calamaio is quite special: this wine is made from 100% Grero, a grape variety that had completely disappeared until 2009. In that year, a large tree was found on the estate that bore the last vine of the Grero. A tree over 120 years old, several metres high and with a trunk diameter of 37 cm.
After several years of research, we are talking here about the vanished variety, which was first mentioned in a book from 1893! In 2020, the first harvest of the Grero was successfully produced. Today, Agricola Bettalunga produces 1,600 bottles of this red wine each year. For more info, go to the website of Cantina Bettalunga.
The Grero is a very strong grape variety and is not susceptible to plant diseases; the grapes have very thick skins but soft tannins. The name Calamaio, freely translated, means ink-black, and that is also the colour of this wine. A wine that pairs with many meat dishes, salami and mature cheeses, but is also more than suitable as an aperitif, as a connoisseur’s wine!
